★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A cosy nook for sardine specialties. Lunch set is inexpensive but be prepared to wait for a table. Doesn’t seem wheelchair-friendly.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ You dont think sardines when you go to Tokyo but I enjoyed lunch here. A Michelin star lunch for less than 10000 yen ($10 USD)? I got the sardines cooked in the simmering egg soup thing. Unique place.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I highly recommend this place, it totally deserves its Michelin star. We arrived at the basement of a quiet alley in Shinjuku around 11:15am on a weekday, before Nakajima opened for lunch at 11:30, and we were 5th in line so got in on the first seating. We decided to get everything. Between 2, the best way to do this is 1x egg set, 1x grilled set, 1x small plate of deel fried and 1x small plate of sashimi. Of course everything is sardines. We really couldn't decide what was our favourite. The egg set is basically the deep fried version cooked in that egg sauce you usually find in the chicken egg rice dish (oyakodon). The flavours are delicate and balanced. The grilled sardine on the other hand had the best flavour as you can really taste the fresh fish, however I struggled with the tiny bones. As usual in Japan, service, interior and atmosphere was lovely. They don't take reservations for lunch so make sure you come a little early on a weekday. The price for dinner is 5x more expensive.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ One of the best places to have a super tasty yet inexpensive lunch in Shinjuku. Lunch costs only between ¥880 and ¥1,500. Impeccable but super efficient service too. They definitely know what they are doing. Just make sure to get there around 11:15 as this place is extremely popular.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ price is reasonable, there is a queue. food is decent and heart warming. I would say it is not wheelchair friendly as there is a stairs leading down to basement. small restaurant, max group size around 6-8 for table sit. Free top up for rice. By the way the food is all sardine, its just different way how the sardine is prepared. Grilled, deep fried or sashimi/raw style. Which is quite amazing and they are Michelin 1 star. Come early i would say because there is a queue. And they only have lunch timing.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 1 Michelin started restaurant that does an inexpensive lunch set menu option of around 1100 yen. All dishes feature sardines, and we had the yanagawanabe option, which was deep fried sardines steamed with egg and onions. We also chose 2 half serve side dishes of sashimi and deep fried fillet. Quickly served and a great way to check out a restaurant that has dinner prices of around 15,000+ yen

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The sashimi felt super fresh and light, best sardine sashimi I’ve tried! Everything tasted well balanced and the flavors came together so well.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I was lucky to go to this Japanese restaurant with a one star Michelin rating. You can eat Sardine lunch at 880 or 990 yen. You can't book a table for lunch. You have to go on the line. I waited to eat for about 30 min.
