6世紀初め、近江国（滋賀県）高島郡三尾前山・白蓮華谷に楠の霊木が生えていて、継体天皇11年（517年）大洪水により流され、琵琶湖上を70年ほどその漂い、色々と不思議な事を起こしていました。
これを耳にした大和国高市郡（奈良県橿原市）八木の小井門子が亡夫の冥福の為に仏像を造ろうと思いたち、滋賀より曳いて来たが霊木の祟りで亡くなりました。
そして、野見宿禰の叔父・飯入根命の８世孫・出雲臣大水沙弥法勢が十一面観音を作ろうと自分の領地である当麻(現在の大和高田を含む)まで曳いて来たが果たさずなくなりました。
奈良時代の初め大満上人が11面観音を彫り上げ本寺に安置。
霊木の残りが長谷寺に安置されたと伝わる。
また別伝では、霊木は天智天皇7年（668年）に磯城郡長谷に曳いて行かれ、長谷寺を開山した徳道上人が夢のお告げによりこの霊木を使って仏像造立を決意。行基やら、藤原房前、果ては聖武天皇まで巻き込んでその願いを果たしました。
東の桜井市初瀬の長谷寺の本尊と、当寺本尊とは同型双霊の尊像となる。したがって、「本」をつけてその由来を表していると云われています。
長谷寺の創建の一端に野見宿禰の縁者・出雲氏が係わったことが示されています。
Summary from Hase-dera luck and Hon-ji luck
At the beginning of the 6th century, a camphor tree was growing in Hakurengetani, Mt. Mio, Takashima-gun, Omi Province (Shiga Prefecture). I was doing a lot of strange things.
Upon hearing this, Kadoko Oi of Yagi, Kashihara City, Yamato Province, decided to make a Buddha statue for the soul of her late husband, and he pulled it from Shiga, but died in the curse of a sacred tree.
Then, Nomi no Sukune's uncle, Iiiri Nemei's eighth grandson, Izumo no Kuni Saya Hosei, came to his territory, Toma (including the current Yamatotakada), to make eleven-faced Kannon. Has stopped working.
At the beginning of the Nara period, Oman Shonin carved 11 Kannon and placed it in the main temple.
It is said that the rest of the sacred tree was enshrined at Hase-dera.
In another biography, the sacred tree was towed to Hase, Shiki-gun in the 7th year of Emperor Tenji (668), and Tokudo Shonin, who opened Hase-dera, decided to use this sacred tree to build a Buddhist statue. Gyoki, Fujiwara no Fusasaki, and even Emperor Shomu were involved in fulfilling that wish.
The principal image of Hase-dera Temple in Hase, Sakurai City in the east, and the principal image of this temple are isomorphic twin spirits. Therefore, it is said that a "book" is attached to indicate its origin.
It is shown that Mr. Izumo, a relative of Nomi no Sukune, was involved in one part of the construction of Hase-dera.
