There is a terrace with a wonderful view of Mt. Fuji, and you can see Lake Kawaguchi in front of you and Lake Yamanaka in the distance. A free shuttle bus from the foot of Fuefuki City runs about once an hour. You will reach the observatory terrace in about 10 minutes on foot from the end station.

In December 2020, the forest road was closed and the observatory maintenance area was off limits even on foot. Perhaps I felt that it was not possible to extend the exclusion zone due to the extension of the maintenance work period of the new observatory, but on the website of the city hall, the forest road can be passed on foot, and the observatory construction site can not be entered on foot. However, it is in a gray state where it is possible to push through the bushes at your own risk. In other words, I think it is possible to reach this first observatory unless it is under construction. By the way, the newly constructed observatory is in the original position of the second observatory and on the way from the second observatory to the first observatory, and this first observatory displayed on Google Maps is Not affected by construction. (Although it affects access). In other words, in the current situation, to go to the first observatory, park your car in the parking lot below (Suzurangunseichi No. 1 parking lot), and walk from there to the original Shindo Pass parking lot, which is a closed forest road. Walk about 3.5km (paved road, steep slope, simple snow spikes are required because the road surface freezes in winter), and then walk in the mountains for about 20 minutes, avoiding the construction site. If you carry camera equipment on your back, it will take a lot of physical strength and a total of about 1 hour one way. Depending on the construction situation, it may be necessary to use a detour route from the Suzuran Pass where the trailhead is in the middle of the forest road. (The ratio of mountain roads will increase) Either way, there is a danger of life in the coming cold season, so please be careful not to overdo it.
