道教（中国の民間宗教）を元とし、庚申信仰が国内で発生し、庚申様という神様が生まれます。仏教、神道などと結びつきますが、神道では、猿田彦（さるたひこ）命と結びつきます。この流れから猿田神社という神社名が付けられたのでしょう。街道筋にある庚申塔や庚申塚も同様な神様です。
