寛永3年（1626年）にご逝去された、徳川二代将軍正室 お江の方の位牌を祀る 御霊屋の別当寺として創建されました。
増上寺での法要の際に、控え部屋、会食部屋として使われました。
明治の初期に現在の場所に移転、さらにマンションの地階に内陣、10階に念持堂という現代的な寺院になっています。
昭和時代の初期には、作家 吉川英治 氏が、間借りして住み、代表作の一つ『親鸞』を執筆したり、宮本武蔵の構想を練ったりしました。

It was founded as a separate temple of a spiritual house that enshrines the plaques of the second Tokugawa Shogun who died in Kanei 3 (1626).
It was used as a waiting room and a dining room during the memorial service at Zojoji.
It moved to its current location in the early Meiji era, and is now a modern temple called Nenjido on the 10th floor.
In the early Showa period, the writer Eiji Yoshikawa lived in a rented room, writing one of his masterpieces, Shinran, and drawing up the concept of Musashi Miyamoto.
