★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 多分、色街や遊郭などの風俗文化が好きだったり研究されてる方にとってはかなり貴重な場所なんだと思います。今はあまり風情のない門が建てられています。

吉原は、江戸文化の中の大きな部分を占める（庶民文芸・美術の多くの部分が、これに関係があるとすら言える）ものであるが、遊郭はどう美化しようが、管理された売春地区であり、そうそう史跡として台東区も打ち出しにくいだろうとは思う。
実際に、遊郭の名残であるソープランドもたくさん残っているから、ここから西へ仲之町通りを抜けて国際通りまで行く間には、男性であれば必ず客引きの兄ちゃんおっちゃんに声をかけられるといってもいい。小学生も普通に通学している通りなんだけど。
いまは申し訳のように、写真のような標柱が立っているのみ。

吉原はその周囲を塀と溝（どぶ）で囲まれ、遊女の逃亡を防ぎ、還俗社会とは遮られていた。一般社会との唯一の接点がこここにあった大門（おおもん）でそこは関所のようであり、守衛も置かれた。
日本堤からここへの道がくねっているのは、視界を遮るため？
よく、歴史ドラマ・映画などにも色々描写される。
最近の歴史ブームで、江戸の歴史の中の一ページとしても出てくる。
その歴史過程・地形・配置・道のりなど興味ある。

お歯黒どぶと言われる掘を巡らせ土を盛って作られた廓は現在のハザードマップでも周辺より高くなっているのが判る。
幾度もの大火、関東大震災、東京大空襲をうけ、遊郭時代を忍ばせる建築物は無い。(お歯黒どぶの石垣跡は数ヶ所残っている)
ただ、道筋だけは変わらず、お歯黒どぶを埋め立てた四方の道路に囲まれ当時のままの道筋が残されている(道路幅は狭くなっている)
伏見通り、角町、京町には赤線時代(昭和21年から昭和33年)のカフェー様式の物件が数件残っている。
尚、吉原という地名は大門跡そばにある『よしわら交番』に唯一残っている。
