It is the head of Tofukuji Temple. There was a "garden in the clouds" by Mirei Shigemori, a master of gardening. It would be nice to spend some time in the garden looking at the meditation.

A strange rock related to the Higo Hosokawa family? The garden of Mr. Mirei Shigemori, whose main focus is on, is wonderful. This time I was lucky enough to see it, but it seems that it is open or not, so it seems better to check in advance. There is a unique raccoon figurine in the small garden, which is also good.

It is easy for the number of people at Tofukuji Temple at the time of autumn leaves. A splendid garden is in the accidental entrance of Reiunin! Quietness like a lie even though it is close to Tofukuji Temple. You can enjoy a quiet view of Shigemori's garden. There are many gardens of Shigemori Sanjo, such as Tofukuji Hojoen, Ryugin-en, and Komyoin Hashinshinen in the vicinity.

When I visited Tofukuji Temple for the first time, the gate was closed and I couldn't enter it. The second time I visited it in the autumn leaves season two years later, and while the approach to Tofukuji Temple was crowded with many tourists, those who were aiming for Reiun-in There were few, and I was able to see it slowly. Reiun-in was founded in 1390 during the Muromachi period by Kiyohoshu, a priest of Tofukuji Temple and the 80th generation. He was also called "Funi Doujin", so when he was first built, he was called "Funin An". After that, in 1473 during the Muromachi period, it was changed to Reiun-in, which means "a precious and mysterious cloud." During the Meiji Restoration, it was the place where Saigo Takamori had a secret talk, and during the Russo-Japanese War, it was also used as a Russian POW camp. Although unobtrusive, Reiun-in is a historically important temple. The people who visit here are looking for the dry landscape garden "Kusen Hakkai no Niwa" and the "Iai Seki" located in the center of the garden. Isn't it a temple treasure of Reiun-in? What is generally called a temple treasure is a historical Buddha statue or a historically important relic, but why is it a stone? It is a celebration from Tadatoshi Hosokawa, the lord of the Kumamoto domain, who was born in Higo Province and was a priest of the 7th generation during the Kanei era (1624-44). However, let's give up on it and use a simple stone that can be placed in the garden as a temple treasure. is. After the war, Mirei Shigemori, a garden maker representing the Showa era and a researcher of many gardens, restored the gardens of "Love Stones" and dry landscape gardens, which are highly regarded as famous stones. There are two gardens, the Kyuyama Hachikai garden and the innovatively designed Woun garden, and it seems that you can also enjoy the garden from the two-story tea room Kangetsutei, which is called the Momoyama style.

I visited Reiun-in in November 2016. There is a garden of Kuyama Hachikai centered on the beloved stone given by the Higo Hosokawa family and a garden of Woun on the west side of the Shoin.

Tourist trap, 10$ for around 5 minutes of visiting. This is not the temple you are looking for.
