C	C on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It is very beautiful to see. Make sure you go when the rice is planted for the full affect. Also, be sure to go ALL the way up to the top. You get a better view. You can get some really great picture!
N	Nightmare Nugget on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I would have given this place 5 stars, but it was so difficult to get to on public transport that the stress of the journey diminished the beauty of the place! I couldn’t find anything other than a 4 year old bus timetable in English online, but thought it was worth risking the journey. I wanted to see the illumination so went late afternoon - luckily got a bus almost immediately after arriving at Awa-Kamogawa at about 15.20 - I’ve posted the location of the bus stop for non-Japanese speakers as I am! I mentioned the bus stop Kamanuma to the bus driver and he told me when we got there thankfully. You then have to walk back in the direction the bus came and take the first road right and follow it through a tunnel an up a hill for about 20 minutes - you will see the rice paddies on the left side of the road. It is a beautiful sight watching the sun go down and the lights come on! Take snacks as the cafe is closed by 16.00, but there is a bench to sit and wait for the lights. We went on Wednesday afternoon and there were only 2 other people there. To return, the bus stop is opposite the one you get there by and I’ve put a photo of the timetable- we caught the 17.37 bus, which in November was enough time to see the lights in the dark. I hope these details help other foreigners to get to and from this place - it’s really beautiful! Just a pain to get to when no one can tell you about the bus timetable! Even staff at the hotel didn’t know!!

The terraces are not as big as you can find on other places in Asia, but they are groomed like a movie set and the nature around is stunning. The place has an east and west valley. Make sure to go all the way up to watch the sunset over the terraces on the west side. Also, try to go in different seasons if you can. In spring, the terraces are inundated, and the rice plants are still small, so you’ll see nice water reflections all around. In summer, when the rice is at its best, you’ll see a gorgeous uniform green in the terraces.
