★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 延喜式神名帳の陸奥国膽澤郡の項に記載のある止止井神社の旧社地。
国道397号線に面する。
江戸時代の安永年間に現在の鎮座地に遷座した。
この旧社地の目と鼻の先に角塚古墳（つのづかこふん）がある。この古墳は本州最北端の前方後円墳で国の指定史跡。およそ、５世紀後半の築造。
そしてこの近くに水沢中半入遺跡という古墳時代の大規模集落があり、この遺跡からは大阪の陶邑で製造された須恵器など遠方から運ばれたものが出土していて、この付近に古墳時代、相当な権力者がいたと思われる。
その後、７世紀になると、古墳時代の影響を残しつつ、北海道で見られる続縄文文化の影響を受けた遺物もこの周辺から発見されていて、蝦夷の支配下にあった地域である。

And there is a large-scale village of the Kofun period called the Mizusawa Nakahannyu site near here, and from this site, things carried from afar, such as Sue pottery manufactured in Osaka's pottery, have been excavated, and the Kofun period is near here. It seems that there were considerable powers in those days.
After that, in the 7th century, relics influenced by the Zoku-Jōmon culture found in Hokkaido were found in this area while retaining the influence of the Kofun period, and it was an area under the control of Ezo.
