＜老松＞のエピソードとして、太宰府に流されることとなった菅原道真公は、自宅の梅の木に向かって、「東風吹かば匂ひおこせよ梅の花主無しとて春を忘るな」と詠んだ。すると、道真公を慕って梅は太宰府の配所まで飛んできた。これが有名な「飛び梅」伝説。じつは京都の道真公の自宅には、梅と並んで桜と松とが生えていた。梅が太宰府へ飛んで行った後、桜の木は、道真公が梅にだけ歌を詠んで桜には何も言葉がなかったことを悲嘆し、ついには枯れてしまった。その悲報を配所で聞いた道真公は、「梅は飛び桜は枯るる世の中に何とて松のつれなかるらん」と詠んだ。すると、こんどは道真公に「つれない」と咎めを受けた松が、梅の後を追って同じく太宰府へとやってきた。これを「追い松（おいまつ）」といい、のちに同音の＜老松＞に転じたもの。

Then, Matsu, who was accused by Michizane of being "unlucky", came to Dazaifu after Ume. This is called "Omatsu", and later changed to the homophone .
