放射線の研究というと核物理学を中心とした分野に思えるかもしれないが、この研究所では最新の放射線医学も研究しており、生物学的な研究のレベルも極めて高い。
12年ほど前に学術研究のカンファレンスで訪問して研究内容を拝見したが、当時での幹細胞性（ステムセルネス）といった非常にニッチな、放射線とは関係が少ない分野でさえ専門的な研究が進んでおり、被爆医療や放射線に関する生物学基礎研究において最新の研究をしていると感じた。
また近年では核融合炉の研究開発に文部科学省側からの主体としてその研究に積極的で、核廃棄物がまったく発生しない核融合炉をフランスや各国と共同で開発中だ。世界トップレベルの「きれいな核」を、核物理学や実験・研究の側面で支えている。
公式アナウンスではフランスと共同で核融合実験炉・発電施設「イータ」を南フランスで建設中で、このQSTが支援しているほか、核融合炉の世界2番目の実験炉を六カ所村に建設予定だ。
もし「きれいな核発電」が実用化されれば、汚い核での旧式原発を、核廃棄物がまったく生じない核融合発電所に置き換えられる可能性があり、人類のエネルギー問題の20年、50年、100年先を見据えた最新の技術がこの研究所から生み出されているのかと思うと、その研究には非常に期待する。

I felt that I was doing the latest research in basic research on biology related to radiation and radiation.
In recent years, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology has been active in the research and development of fusion reactors, and is developing a fusion reactor that does not generate any nuclear waste in collaboration with France and other countries. It supports the world's top level "clean nucleus" in terms of nuclear physics and experiments / research.
In the official announcement, a fusion experimental reactor and power generation facility "Eta" is under construction in southern France in collaboration with France, and in addition to being supported by this QST, the world's second experimental fusion reactor will be constructed in Rokkasho Village. I'm planning.
If "clean nuclear power" is put into practical use, it could replace old-fashioned nuclear power plants with dirty nuclear power plants with fusion power plants that generate no nuclear waste, 20 or 50 years of human energy problems. I wonder if the latest technology that looks 100 years into the future is being produced from this institute, and I have high expectations for that research.
