古墳の周りは小さいが天神洞公園として整備されている。
かつて香貫地区一帯には、香貫九十塚と称される古墳群が各所に存在していた。
天神洞古墳群もこの香貫九十塚の一部で、6世紀末から7世紀にかけて造営されたもので、庶民層の上層部の者の墓、おそらく大家族制社会の中における家父長クラスの者の墓であろうと推定される。
副葬品として、武器類や装身具、土器類などが多数出土した。特に第3号墳からは瑪瑙（メノウ）製勾玉や水晶製切子玉、碧玉製管玉など、各種の玉類が約90点出土し貴重な発見となった。
これらの出土遺物は「沼津市歴史民俗資料館」に保管されている。
