中鯖石郵便局を過ぎてすぐ左折すれば柏崎市立鯖石小学校が見えます。
鯖石小学校と道を挟んで今は使われていないと思われる交通公園がありますが、その敷地の中に「中鯖石道路元標」はあります。
寄り添うように立つ案内板の内容から、中鯖石コミュニティーセンターが管理していると思われます。
北海道のほとんどの道路元標が、コンクリート製だったのとは違い今日廻った新潟県のものはほとんど「赤御影」でした。
また、北海道の道路原標は、必ず裏面に「北海道廳」と書かれていましたが、今回はすべて書かれていませんでした。
コミュニティーセンターの北には野球グラウンドが、そして桜並木が散り始めていました。
また、交通公園内には「鯖石川治水紀功の碑」が建てられていますが、説明板の文字は何者かによって消されていました。
