キャサリン台風後の渡良瀬川護岸強化(かさ上げ)工事の最後の工事に成ります。 現中橋隣(下流)に橋桁を作り、現中橋を移し歩道&自転車道として生まれ変わります。 その後現中橋部分の護岸を補強し新橋桁を作り新中橋を架けます。 橋北側は、陸橋でJR.を越え通り二丁目交差点に接続されます。 尚、工事は、仮橋を掛けずに進めるそうです。 【中橋】足利市街地と東武足利市駅を結ぶ、橋長295m。19世紀末ドイツで生まれたブレースドリブ・タイドアーチという構造で同構造の橋は全国に10箇所残るのみ。 1934年(昭和9年)着工、完成は、1936年(昭和11年)で、同年8月7日の花火大会日に開通式が行われた。県、市、東武鉄道が共同事業者と成り、当時の総事業費は、35万円。東武鉄道が10万円、市が5万円を負担した記録が残る。
