Khu thương mại Motomachi, Kobe, vào năm 1894 (năm Minh Trị thứ 27) những con đường được mở rộng, và được trải nhựa vào năm 1913 (năm Taisho thứ 2). Nơi đây phát triển thành khu vực thương mại tiêu biểu cho Kobe – miền đất phát triển thịnh vượng trong thời kỳ kinh tế phát triển giai đoạn chiến tranh thế giới thứ nhất. Để tạo cho khu thương mại sức hấp dẫn hơn nữa, vào năm 1926 (năm Taisho thứ 15) khu phố đã tiến hành lắp đặt đèn đường “Suzuran-tou” theo phong cách Art nouveau (tân nghệ thuật) có hình dạng giống với hoa linh lan và nó đã trở thành biểu tượng của Motomachi. Do chính sách thu gom kim loại trong thời chiến mà một thời đã vắng bóng các loại đèn này, tuy nhiên sau chiến tranh, các loại đèn này được phục hồi mặc dù với độ lớn chỉ bằng một nửa và mỗi một khu phố lại có một kiểu thiết kế khác nhau.
