御津町の歴史も古く、8代天皇の孝元天皇(西暦前200年)が当国の行幸の時に、御船を此の津に寄せられたことから、当地を御津湊とされたことが惣国風土記に記されており、天皇は既に此の地にあらせられる神社に対し、御津神社の名を賜ったとされている。
