★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very nice temple to visit. It was very interesting to see the offerings going on by small groups of regular residents when we visited. We were not expecting anything out of the ordinary for a temple visit, but this one had its own unique quirks. Very enjoyable and I am glad we made a long walk out of this during our adventure.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The legendary origins of Matsuchiyama, the hill by the Sumida River that the 待乳山聖天 Matsuchiyama shouten is built upon, contribute to the popularity of the location in ukiyo-e (woodblock) prints of famous places around Edo/Tokyo. The slope facing the river is named the 天狗坂 Tengu Escarpment and has stairs climbing up to the temple precincts. Alas, in recent years this has been closed to visitors.
The temple grounds are full of daikon imagery (a symbol of man's ignorance) and auspicious pouches representing treasure and success in business.
The temple has an English language web site that describes some of the treasures at the temple and the symbolism of daikon and pouches.
