築城時期は不明ですが、正和4年(1315年)に本吉郡馬籠城主千葉忠広の次男広胤が気仙郡矢作に入部、この城を築城したとされています。以降矢作千葉氏は、広胤の子・重胤の代に蛇ヶ崎城、高田城、二日市城に庶子家を入れて広田湾周辺に勢力を広げました。 ⁡ 永禄年間(1558〜1570年)頃、当時気仙最大の勢力となっていた高田城主浜田安房守広綱は拠点をより堅固な米ヶ崎城へ移し軍備を増強、度々主君である葛西晴信に背くようになりました。そして天正16年(1588年)、遂に広綱は気仙勢を率いて本吉へと侵攻。気仙沼熊谷党を攻撃しました。「浜田兵乱」と呼ばれるこの戦いで、矢作千葉氏当主矢作重常は浜田へ付かずに熊谷氏に味方した葛西方に加担。結果、重常の活躍と長崎館主熊谷直長の計略によって浜田勢を撃退しました。 ⁡ 戦後、重常は浜田氏になり代わり葛西晴信より気仙郡の旗頭として金の采配与えられ、郡の仕置を命ぜられました。これにより、気仙郡千葉氏宗家としての名誉を挽回することになりました。 ⁡ しかしその栄光も束の間、矢作千葉氏は天正18年(1590年)の豊臣秀吉による奥州仕置によって葛西氏共々改易の憂き目に遭い、翌年葛西大崎一揆が勃発すると矢作重常は一揆勢に加わり桃生郡に出陣しましたが、深谷で討ち死にしたといわれています。

As a result, the Hamada group was repelled by the success of Shigetsune and the strategy of Naonaga Kumagai, the owner of Nagasaki. ⁡ After the war, Shigetsune took the place of Mr. Hamada and was given gold by Harunobu Kasai as the head of Kesen District, and was ordered to punish the county.
