本寺の草創は明応年中(1492～1500年)正善と申僧諸旦那の助力を以って一宇を建立、寛永年中に本山より寺号、木仏、免許を渡されました。
明暦年中に現在地に移転したようです。
現在の寺地は元々石田城址でうっそうとした段状地に位置し一見して城址を偲ばせる佇まいです。
約二百年前に火災にあい一切の記録類を焼失して由来の詳細が分からないのが残念です。
元々は天台宗でありましたが一向宗に転じ、徳島の東光寺末でしたが安永七年(1778年)離末し興正寺末となり現在は本願寺派と成り寺格は上座です。
