明治に北山村、大塩村、桧原村の3カ村で構成。役場は喜多方市との境に近く、江戸時代は旧米沢街道の宿場町として桧原地区を中心に発展している。
A white building located on a hill overlooking the Aizu basin. At the entrance, a bust of Sakuma Otake welcomes you. He was born in Kitayama 100 years ago and became the chairman of the prefectural assembly and the 64th governor of Fukushima prefecture.
It consists of three villages, Kitayama Village, Oshio Village, and Hinohara Village in the Meiji era. The government office is close to the border with Kitakata City, and during the Edo period it developed around the Hibara district as a post town on the former Yonezawa Highway.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 直接役場には行った事はないのですが、近くにある中学校の先生で同級生がいて会いに行った時に教えて頂いたその中学校の側の食堂で食べた喜多方ラーメン【手打ちラーメン】が美味しいと思いました、ラーメン店の名前は覚えていません、役にたたずスミマセンが投稿しました。

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 基本的に仕事している人はごく一部。利用者が訪ねてきても無視。前に住民課を利用しに訪ねた時は5㍍程離れた職員にこちらが大きな声出して訪ねても、目があっても仲良し数人集まってコーヒー飲みながら雑談してたのにとても腹が立ちました。(因みにこのやり取りは5分ほどやってました)他の部署の方が見かねて代わりに対応している間も仕事もせずに雑談を続けていました。
