板碑とは、板状の石製卒塔婆で鎌倉時代から室町時代に多く作られた。ここのは源平合戦の平安時代末から鎌倉時代初期に活躍した強力な関東武士団:横山党の矢部義兼とその一族を弔っており、阿弥陀如来像や蓮花が刻まれて画像板碑ともいわれている。
道路斜め向かいには、矢部城跡の土塁が残存されています。
