★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 竜王町の説明板によれば、西光寺は伝教大師最澄の開基、嵯峨天皇の勅願所、僧坊300を擁する大寺院だった、とのこと。鎌倉時代から室町時代にかけて、将軍などの貴人の宿泊所ともなったとか。それほどの大寺院がどうして荒廃、滅亡することになったのか。説明板には記載がないが、近江は戦乱が続発した土地がら。ここから登った星が峰にも城跡がある。それに東山道、中山道のすぐ側で様々な勢力の確執の舞台ともなったのだろう。おそらく何らかの戦乱に巻き込まれたのではないか。
 According to the explanation board of Ryuo Town, Saikou-ji Temple was a large temple that has the foundation of Daisyo Daishi Saicho, Emperor Saga's royal shrine, and 300 Buddhist monks. From the Kamakura era to the Muromachi era, it became a lodging place for generals and other nobles. Why was such a large temple ruined and destroyed? Although there is no description on the explanation board, Omi is a land where wars continued. The star climbing from here has a castle on the peak. Moreover, it may have been the stage of feud between various powers on the immediate side of the Higashisendo and Nakasendo. Perhaps I was involved in some kind of war.
