★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Before the COVID-19 pandemic, JR East was well known for its stellar service compared to railway operators in other countries.
However, JR East neglected basic maintenance of the electrical infrastructure in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area since the beginning of the pandemic, and as a result, an explosion occurred at this substation around 1:00 PM on October 10, 2021. This incident has led to multiple vital train lines in the area to be completely shut down for two or more hours, at the detriment of ordinary passengers.
This is definitely not a good sign, as this incident tarnishes the image that Japanese trains are one of the best in the world. Additionally, tourists would have to put up with these incidents if JR East doesn't regularly maintain their electrical infrastructure when Japan reopens to foreign tourists.
This incident is also a warning sign for railway operators outside of Japan, such as Amtrak in the US, that negligence of electrical infrastructure can lead to substation fires.
