★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 訪れてみると、まずその杉の古木の見事なのに驚く。樹齢は400年を超えているというが、数十本の杉の木が、素晴らしい樹影を落とし、来る者を労ってくれる。
満福山城国寺は、曹洞宗の古刹である。開かれたのは応永元年（1394）と伝えられ、山形県大石田町にある向川寺四世の竺室良厳大和尚によって開かれた。
江戸時代には、仙台藩宿老の遠藤家やその家臣団、地元の民衆によって護持され、享保年間以降は大本山總持寺の輪番地の１つとして總持寺五院の一、伝法庵に住職が進んだ。
現在でも、山門や本堂は江戸時代の建築物を遺し、それらに見える江戸時代建築の文化的価値も非常に高い寺院である。
