I've long been a fan of Ukiyo-e, and this museum was absolutely fantastic for me! They run a looping video that walks through the process end-to-end, and have many prints on view (I seem to remember around 130 at the time I was there in 2014). It's great to be able to get up close to these beautiful works, as well as see a fairly broad array of artists represented. If you're going to Matsumoto, you shouldn't miss this.

Warning: skip. There's one medium-sized (dingy) room (with some stains on the floor) and only around 40-60 prints. The rest of the museum is off limits, except--of course--the gift shop. Also--of course--didn't bother to tell us that when purchasing tickets. Pictures that show the museum are not accurate. The staff, while "polite," sat and ate food and gossiped in the lobby at 3:30pm loudly. Surely one of the 5 people employed to oversee this single room and postcard cubby could have mentioned that there were no prints to be seen before charging us. Spend the 2,000 yen on a nice meal instead.

As other reviews have already noted, the exhibition space is rather small, but 100% worth the visit. Housing one of the most extensive collections of Ukiyo-e in the world, there are always hidden gems in the mix. I have been to multiple exhibitions so far and they have always been well curated, with descriptions in both Japanese and English. There is also a video room where they show a documentary on the production of Ukiyo-e, which is also available in English. The gift shop is also not to be overlooked, offering everything from postcards to high quality woodblock reprints. The museum is not easily accessible though, as it is situated outside of the main Matsumoto area.

Only worth it when lost for something to do. Sad concrete building with a drab walk to get to. None of the well-known pieces were on display at time of visit.

The ukiyo-e are nice, but the selection is small. Don't let the pictures deceive you, the entire museum which is open to the public is only one small room which only takes 30 minutes to see and read everything. For 1000 yen entrance fee, I would not recommend it. The location is not close to any stations. A taxi from Matsumoto station was 1500 yen.

Nice ukiyo-e. Well documented in English. There just wasn't enough prints for the price.

While the write suggests that the museum has a large collection of works, only a very small selection and only limited scope of work is on display in the one exhibition space. Not really worth the 1000¥ entry fee unless you are looking specifically for what they have on display. The English descriptions and educational write ups which they have are of good quality though.

Interesting museum. Exhibit of prints changes by season. Video in English available to watch, exhibit and gift shop.
