★ ★ ★ ★ ★ かなり古い建物です。県営という割に規模はさほど大きくはなく、駐車場も広くはありません。
白紙撤回されはしましたが、東京五輪のメイン会場である新国立競技場のデザインで当初採用となったことで有名になったキールアーチを用いた建築法がこの岩手県営体育館にも用いられており、他の一般的な体育館とは異なる外観となっています。
プロバスケットボールの岩手ビッグブルズの本拠地ですが、試合のある日には車が収まりきりません。いわて銀河鉄道の青山駅がすぐ近くにありますし、バスも運行しています。なので、利用の際には公共の交通機関を利用されることをオススメ致します。
