This Tenshozan Hounji Temple, which is a Jodo sect, is a family temple of Gamo Ujisato's father, Katahide, and its tomb is enshrined in the precincts.
In the 12th year of the Tensho era (1584), in order to mourn Kenshu who passed away at Kaigake Castle during his departure from Ujisato, a hermitage was set up in Hino Castle, and the tea master Houn became the hermitage owner. Since the domain office of the Shoji clan was established, it was moved to the present location and called Hounji, and the lantern was introduced to the present.
Kenshu's Bodaiji Temple is also located in Aizuwakamatsu, where Ujisato was transferred, and the temple is called the Rinzai sect, Erinji.
