征夷大将軍・坂上田村麻呂と対立した魏石鬼八面大王が立てこもったと言われる岩屋。 その実は六世紀後半の古墳である。 ドルメン式古墳、いわゆる支石墓だが、日本では珍しいタイプの古墳で福岡、佐賀、長崎等の一部の地域で見られ、そのルーツは遼東、吉林、朝鮮辺りである。 なぜ、こんなところにそんな古墳が? ここ安曇野を開拓したのは、九州は福岡で古代に勢力を誇っていた安曇氏の末裔といわれている。 安曇氏は海運に優れた海人族で、漢委奴國王の金印で有名な奴国の王族と比定されていることから、大陸との交易があったことがわかる。 その海人族だった安曇氏は大和朝廷との争いに敗れ、西暦6世紀ころに安曇野の地を開拓し、定住したという。 なるほど、だからこんな山奥に大陸の文化が残る古墳がある訳だ。 また、魏石鬼八面大王だが、魏石鬼という名で別称として八面大王と呼んだらしい。 八面大王は大和言葉の読みでは「やめのおおきみ」であり、筑紫(熊本県)は八女を治めていた豪族の磐井氏と関係があるといわれている。 磐井氏も6世紀の磐井の乱で大和朝廷との争いに敗れている。 話は逸れるがそれだけではない。 国譲りで有名な建御名方神も大和朝廷の使者・建御雷神に敗れて、信州は諏訪の地に逃げ延びる。 その建御名方(タケノミナカタ)も一説では九州の豪族・宗像氏の「ムナカタ」変化したと言われている。 仮にこれらの説が正しいとしたら、九州の3部族がこの地に逃げ込んだのは、ただの偶然なのか? 一説ではこの地で産出されるヒスイが目当てと言われているが、戦に敗れた部族が自由に定住地を選べたのだろうか? 自由に選べるとしても、海人族が海ではなく山を選ぶだろうか? 私はこの辺は当時の流刑地のような扱いの、未開の辺境だったのではないかと考えている。 ただ、それでは敵性部族を一まとめに置くことになり、共謀して反乱を起こされる可能性もある。 そう!穴だらけの仮説なのだ。 それはそうと、この古墳だが6世紀後半に作られたらしい。 写真を見てほしいが、確かに立派な支石墓だ。 中には入れなかったが覗いてみると・・・おや? コウモリがすみついてらぁ。

正福寺さまから山中の歩道を進んで行きます。地面が濡れていると滑りやすいので注意が必要。 道中にはたくさんの石仏が並んでいます。 岩窟は荘厳でとても迫力があります。 中には入れませんが外からでも充分。 付近にはスパンと割ったような巨石もあり、巨人と言われた八面大王さまが本当にいたのかなと感じさせます。 素晴らしい史跡なのにちょっとわかりにくいところがもったいない。山中にひっそりと佇む古墳です。
