It is the oldest of the 4 remaining venerable five story pagodas in Kanto region. The pagoda is the sole remaining in Japan from the Momoyama period (1573-1615). The structure combines architectural elements from Japan and Tang dynasty of China. Between 1997 and 2002 the building was completely disassembled & rebuilt/restored/repaired. It is designated an Important Cultural property of Japan. A type of 蘿 moss called ホンモンジゴケ Honmonjigoke has been found in the stone steps of the foundation. The woodblock print artist Hasui created a depiction of the pagoda at night (1956).
