そして１０年ちょっとくらい前のある夜に、この橋の上でタヌキに遭遇した。遊行寺の山から降りてきた感じであった。
通称 赤橋。 実は藤沢レペゼン。

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 江戸時代には参勤交代の大名行列も渡り、大山詣や江の島詣の参詣者で賑わっていたそうです。江戸方向から遊行寺橋を渡ると、右は旧東海道、左は旧江の島道で、すぐ隣には江の島一の鳥居があったそうです。浮世絵を見ると木橋だったようですが、今はコンクリート製の擬宝珠のついた赤い欄干の橋になっています。

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 元々は大鋸橋として浮世絵にも登場した橋で、旧東海道が境川を越えるために架けられました。
旧東海道と江ノ島へ向かう旧江ノ島道との分岐点であり、その昔は江戸から来て大鋸橋を渡った左側に江島神社の一之鳥居も建っていたそうです。
