★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 毘沙門堂(びしゃもんどう)古墳は、現海岸線から約２ｋｍの標高2m程の旧浜堤上に立地する古墳で円墳とすれば、直径50m、墳丘の高さ8ｍの県内でも最 大級となるものですが、墳丘南側が張り出したように崩れた形状になっているため、帆立貝(ほたてがい)式の前方後円墳ではないかという考えもあります。
墳丘には葺石(ふきいし)などの施設は確認されていませんが、古墳のまわりから薄手の円筒埴輪(はにわ)が採集されているほか、墳頂付近からは土師器(はじ き)破片などが発見されています。なお、平成6年の集中豪雨で墳丘北側が一部崩壊した際、円筒埴輪と朝顔形埴輪がまとまって発見されています。埴輪の出土 状況から、墳丘部北側に同時に配列したものと考えられ、埴輪の焼成には窯(かま)を使用していたことがわかりました。
