詳細な創建は不詳ですが、奈良時代にはこの地に存在していたといわれています。しかし一番のポイントは三方ヶ原の戦いの際に徳川家康がここに身を隠し、阿弥陀如来より「布橋の戦略」授かって、一命を取り留めたという由来があり、その因縁から寺紋が三つ葉葵という由緒深いお寺です。

曹洞宗半田山龍泉寺の境内、山門をくゞって左手に阿弥陀堂が見えます。建てられたのが正保四年（1647）と言いますから赤く設えられた屋根は古態を覆っているのでしょうか。お堂は開かれていますが、中に祀られる白木の坐像の阿弥陀如来は行基の作と伝えられ、秘仏で見ることは叶いません。この阿弥陀如来は雨乞いに霊験あらたかであるとされます。昔、三方原の戦で敗走する徳川家康が逃げ込み身を潜めた夢枕に布橋の作戦を授けられた、とする伝説も伝わる龍泉寺阿弥陀堂は台地の東に位置し直ぐ東は崖下となっています。「信長公記」にも家康は台地の東の際を一騎駆けに駆けた、ともされており、三方原の戦はお堂が建つより遥か以前の話ですが行基は更に古くありますから阿弥陀如来も今とは別の形で祀られていたのでしょうか。
