環濠（かんごう）という堀が築かれました。豊臣秀吉によって一度埋め戻されましたが、江戸時代に元の位置より外側に再度掘られました。
1970年の大阪万博の当時、高速道路と一般道の整備が進められ、環濠の東側が埋め立てられましたが、当時の環濠に架かっていた「極楽橋」が、土居川公園に移設され保存されています。

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 2021年6月13日、土居川公園に来てみたらこんなところに極楽橋があるってびっくりしました。高野山のものを持ってきているのかと思いました。
宿屋町東と神明町東との境界付近の土居川に架けられていた石橋だったのをここに持ってきたみたいですね。堅い花崗岩で死者の極楽往生を願って造られたようです。
