明治9年(1876年)7月16日、約50日をかけた初の東北巡幸の日程を終えられた明治天皇は、ここ青森港の浜町桟橋から函館港を経由して7月20日に横浜港に帰港されましたが、この時、明治天皇が乗船されたのが日本初の鉄製蒸気船「明治丸」です。そして、その明治丸の主錨(しゅびょう)の複製がモニュメントとしてここ聖徳公園に展示してありました。明治天皇が明治丸で無事に横浜港に帰港された7月20日という日は、後に「海の記念日」となり、現在は「海の日」として国民の祝日となっています。東北巡幸の際、明治天皇が乗船された明治丸と海の記念日(7月20日)にはそんな関係があったんですね。この聖徳公園に明治丸の主錨(しゅびょう)のモニュメントと海の記念日発祥の地の石碑とが仲良く並んでいるのにはちゃんとした理由があったのです。この「明治丸」は、明治新政府が洋式の灯台の建設を進めていたことに伴い、イギリスから輸入した新型の蒸気船でした。それまでは明治天皇は、軍艦にしか乗っていませんでしたが、この時初めて軍艦以外の船に乗ったそうです。特別室やサロンを備えた豪華な仕様で、単に灯台業務ばかりでなくロイヤルシップの役目も兼ねた船でした。明治天皇が乗船した後、多くの高官も乗船し、日本の近代史の重要な場面で活躍したそうです。ちなみにこの「明治丸」の大きさは、総トン数1,028トン、長さ７３ｍ。青函連絡船のメモリアルシップ八甲田丸の全長が132ｍなので、八甲田丸の約半分程の大きさだったんですね。ところで、この明治天皇が乗られたこの「明治丸」ですが、現在、現存する唯一の鉄船（現在の船はすべて鋼船）として国の重要文化財に指定され、東京海洋大学の越中島キャンパスに保存されていて見ることが出来るそうです。上京した際、チャンスがあったら是非、船内とかも見学してみたいですね。入場は、無料だそうです。
