芦ノ口遺跡は，市の南部にあり，JR長町駅の西約2.5ｋｍ，三神峯公園の北側に位置する。東北大学電子光理学研究センター等の敷地全域に広がる遺跡で，標高約50mの河岸段丘上に立地する。その面積は約49,800㎡で，範囲は東西約450m，南北約550mである。昭和51年（1976）から継続的に発掘調査が行われてきている。遺跡の主体は平安時代で，竪穴住居跡や竪穴遺構，焼土遺構，ピットなどが検出されている。ピットの中には，赤焼土器と土師器，土錘が一括投棄されたものも発見されている。弥生時代では，中期・後期の土器が，古墳時代では前期と後期の土器と，埴輪の破片が出土している。

The Ashinoguchi Ruins are located in the southern part of the city, about 2.5 km west of JR Nagamachi Station, and on the north side of Mikamine Park. It is an archaeological site that spreads over the entire site of the Tohoku University Electronic Photophysics Research Center, etc., and is located on a river terrace at an altitude of about 50 m. The area is about 49,800 m2, and the range is about 450 m east-west and about 550 m north-south. Archaeological excavations have been conducted continuously since 1976. The main site of the ruins was the Heian period, and the remains of pit dwellings, pit remains, burnt soil remains, and pits have been detected. In the pit, red-burned earthenware, Haji pottery, and earthen weights were found to have been dumped all at once. In the Yayoi period, pottery from the middle and late stages was excavated, and in the Kofun period, pottery from the early and late stages and fragments of haniwa were excavated.

芦ノ口遺跡は三神峯公園の三神峯遺跡の一部と考えて、大きい意味で三神峯遺跡の名称がふさわしい。（町名は三神峯一丁目です）石器の使用時代から土器使用時代の永きにわたり古代人が生活していた証である。今はその場所で、原子核や素粒子の研究施設がある。三神峯遺跡と区別するなら旧町名の金山遺跡が良いかもしれない。しかし、金山窯跡があるから、別名を名付けたのかも知れない。遺跡の名前は、学者や学生、研究者が地元の意見を聞いて正しく名付けて頂きたいですね。ちなみに、現地の旧町名は「金山」であり、「芦ノ口」は掘りをはさんで北側の町名でした。

(The name of the town is Mikamine 1-chome) It is a proof that ancient people lived for a long time from the time when stone tools were used to the time when earthenware was used. There is now a research facility for atomic nuclei and elementary particles at that location. If you want to distinguish it from the Mikamine ruins, the old town name Kanayama ruins may be good. However, because of the remains of the Kanayama kiln, it may have been given another name. I would like scholars, students, and researchers to listen to the opinions of the local community and name the ruins correctly. By the way, the local old town name was "Kanayama", and "Ashinoguchi" was the town name on the north side of the digging.
