On the smaller side but a still very nice station with decent food selection in the area

Just reached Maibara station for brief stopover. It's a slight drizzle in the morning. It's just a small station overlooking nearby residential areas. Houses are quite modern built.

My brothers live in Shiga and wanted to me for lunch, I decided to meet up with them. Okuni-san said to meet them at this station and so once I arrived, they picked me up. I took the Shinkansen here.

I have been all over Japan from top to bottom. I have ridden the bullet train to Tokyo 2 dozen times. I have taken sleeper trains. Just for kicks I have tried to visit as many prefectures as possible by local train (30+). Maibara is my least favorite most hated station in Japan. A desperate afterthought you find all to often. Here is a massive already established infrastructure, wait we need to build roads and trains lines. Let's just make pure insanity. Maibara is in the middle of no where yet one of the busiest and biggest stations in Japan. The race to change changed is miniscule. And if you have more than 3 frantic minutes there is nothing. No restaurant. No kiosk. Barely a drink machine. I used to think building the bullet train in hokuriku was pointless becuase they said it would save barely 15 min to Tokyo yet cost even more.. however, those 15 minutes no more stopping at maibara ever again. The hokuriku bullet train can't get here fast enough

It’s a fairly small local train station located in Maibara, Shiga. Conveniently located between Nagoya and Kyoto. Shinkansen stop here (Kodama and some Hikari stop at this station), and can transfer to Omi line (近江鉄道), Hokuriku Line (北陸線), or Tokaido line (東海道線). There are two exits (west and east) at this station and elevators are available. Coin parking is about 600yen per day which is pretty affordable. There is (Toyoko inn) 東横イン when you exit from the west exit.

Nothing particularly wrong with the station perse, its a transfer station for Shinkazen. But as a traveller who wanted to check out some of the local sights around lake biwa for a day excursion before going on to Nagoya, it was very strange to me that this transfer station doesn't have locker facilities! I had to lug my suitcase around with me. So UnJapanese like inefficient.

A good place to spot Shinkansen trains passing at full speed! Easy to get there if going between Tokyo and Osaka as the slower Shinkansen services stop here. Station itself is fairly basic but all runs just as smoothly as every other Japanese station.
