★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Lovely shrine near the Usui Pass looktout. Combine both! The shrine sits on the border of Gunma and Nagano, and there is an indicator on the floor. The sacred tree in a quiet corner of the shrine grounds has a hearted-shaped hole which you can see from a certain angle.

It’s low key and a bit isolated and not overrun by tourists.
Walking up from Karuizawa is a pleasant walk.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Traditional Japanese shrine on top of the hill above of Karuizawa. Apart from the shrine itself, there is a viewing spot and restaurants nearby. It is only a few minutes drive from the Karuizawa Union Church, so definitely worth a visit.
